Discovery Park: Seattle's 534-acre backyard

Forest, sea-cliff meadows, two miles of beach, and a historic lighthouse — the largest park in Seattle, right at the edge of Magnolia.

Updated 2026 · By the Magnolia Crestview leasing team

Discovery Park is the crown jewel of Magnolia and the single biggest reason people fall in love with the neighborhood. At 534 acres it's Seattle's largest public park — a former military base (Fort Lawton) returned to nature, now a mosaic of forest, open meadows, dramatic bluffs, and tidal beaches. For residents of Magnolia, it functions as an enormous shared backyard.

The trails

The park has roughly 12 miles of walking trails. The signature route is the Discovery Park Loop Trail, a 2.8-mile designated National Recreation Trail that threads through forest and meadow with regular openings onto Puget Sound and, on clear days, the Olympic Mountains. Side trails branch toward the bluffs, the South Beach, and the North Beach.

The beach & the lighthouse

A steeper trail descends from the bluff to the water and the West Point Lighthouse (built 1881), one of the most photographed spots in Seattle. The beach offers tide-pooling, driftwood, and wide views across the Sound. Note that it's a real hike down and back up — budget time and water — but the payoff is worth it.

Good to know: General parking is near the east and south entrances and can fill on sunny weekends. A limited permit system allows beach-area access for those with mobility needs — check Seattle Parks for current details before you go.

Wildlife & birding

Discovery Park is one of the best urban birding spots in the region, with hundreds of species recorded across its varied habitats. Expect eagles, herons, and seabirds along the shore, plus the occasional seal hauled out on the beach.

Daybreak Star

Within the park sits the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, home to the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation, which hosts art and community programming. It's a meaningful part of the park's identity and worth a visit.

Living next to it

The best way to enjoy Discovery Park is to live close enough to go often — a quick morning loop before work, a sunset walk, a weekend beach trip without planning a whole outing. Magnolia Crestview sits just minutes away, so the park becomes part of everyday life rather than a destination.
